Revised Steeles of Georgia Genealogy and Time Line

  1. I am the great grandson of Robert Steele. I was thrilled to find your genealogy blog on the Steele brothers of Georgia. I had researched my family back to the Walter Steele and the “Famous Steele Bros” several years ago, but I knew nothing about the family beyond him. Thanks for all this information! We are anxious to visit the Steele Mill in GA.

  2. I have researched this line and the Norman portion does not line up with the historical record. No medieval record—Domesday, Pipe Rolls, charters, or Norman chronicles—lists a Bigot de Loges as an ancestor of the Steele family.
The name appears only in commercial heraldry summaries, not in archival sources. The statement that the Steeles were granted lands in Cheshire by William I is not supported by Domesday Book entries.
The Domesday reference to “Steel” in Hodnet hundred refers to a place, not a Steele family, and it was held by Roger de Courseulles, not a Steele.
